On May 10th we were invited to the Governor of Herat’s State House. He wished to thank us for the water project just completed and also for the past projects. He was very respectful and kind and we sat, drank tea and ate the usual snacks, almonds, raisins, pumpkin seeds and sweet-coated candies.
We talked about the importance of the water projects and how a large community will benefit for a long time. Also, about the most significant accomplishment that is, community and others with cooperation of government can solve their problem and accomplish such great tasks in a short time for small amounts of money. The government has many reasons why it cannot do many things but what’s important is that we find ways to help others through our efforts. Let communities become empowered and the government will change, it doesn’t ever seem to work the other way, anywhere.
As we spoke I told him that two years ago I spent a night by the Panjsher River with the Governor of Panjsher. He erected a big tent and served delicious fresh fish, it was very memorable. He knew the Governor and they are good friends. He later, as we were leaving invited us to breakfast on Monday morning before I left for Kabul. As Suraya said it’s a very gracious invitation and one we could not refuse!
Early Monday morning Suraya and I went to the Governor’s State House and also met other important government officials invited to the breakfast. About 8 of us walked out into the magnificent garden of beautiful roses and other flowers and sat on an elegant carpet to have breakfast. His surprise, which really pleased him, to me and the others was a platter of fresh cooked fish. He was proud to offer his best for he certainly enjoyed pleasing us and also did not want to be less of a host than the Governor of Panjsher. It was really a happy display of someone showing their appreciation, kindness and wanting to give you their best. It kind of felt like when your mom surprises you with your favorite meal, everyone feels the union of joy, respect and yes, also, love!
